Typically, a cat that is destroying furniture, carpets, etc., is bored.  A cat doesn't destroy furniture because it has claws and wants to annoy you.  It needs a proper place for exercising its claws and paws and probably doesn't have it. You can fix that problem with a  sturdy, cat-friendly scratching post.

Then, your cat probably has no one to run around and play with when you're out.

The best answer would be to get your cat a companion cat, or other animal, your cat needs.
