How does it work so well

“Carole Wilbourn offers dual-species family therapy”, says National Geographic.

The Wilbourn Way is a unique combination of three things:

1. An uncanny empathy for cats and their guardians. I was born with it.

2. The wisdom of a lifetime of cat practice. My life’s calling has always been clear: I am a born advocate of cats’ well being, have successfully treated more than 13,000 cats. That’s a lot. I’ve seen it all; including very many cases where I was the only alternative to euthanasia. My clients say I’m the first and last resort of cats and their guardians.

3. My continually evolving Toolset. Forty years ago, before cat behavior therapy was a widely practiced discipline, I co-founded the first cat only veterinary practice in New York City. That was in 1973, one of the reasons pundits have dubbed me the Founding Mother of Cat Psychology.  But the need is so great that my practice and tools have continually evolved beyond traditional psychology and clinical approaches to cat behavior.  Early on, for example, my clients healed faster with the reinforcing balm of audio therapy. And always, what informs The Wilbourn Way in each case is my empathetic relationship with the cat.

So over the years, “The Cat Therapist” evolved to also coach and train guardians to manage the cat’s ecosystem. And The Wilbourn Way will continue to evolve in order to bring balance and well being to the interspecies household, with its latest resource -- Reiki treatments for cats and their guardians.

The Interspecies Household

The art and science of harmonious interspecies households is an ongoing search. I keep my practice at the leading edge with constant learning from each case, applying innovations of my own and adapting the discoveries of others. Adding Reiki to help balance the interspecies household is an example of that.  The cats and their families love it.  Happy cat, happy family!

Reiki enables me to offer my palliative (calming) hands to treat my patients and their guardians. The word Rei -- the universal mind, higher intelligence, and ki -- life-force energy, combine together to return the body to its entirety. When there’s stress or pain, the mind, body, and spirit are at dis-ease. Reiki restores balance -- ease.  When Reiki is administered early on, the response is greater.

I recently treated some cats at a fund-raising event. One of the cats had had pelvic surgery for a fracture. Later one of the attendees said, “What a relieved expression on that cat’s face as you treated her. We watched her face soften as your hands went over her body.” I feel so very much gratitude that my helping hands can help others …... and they help me.

Family Therapy

If the cat’s guardian is upset, quite often the cat will mirror the guardian’s angst or confusion. So in my work to treat the 'total cat', it is essential for me to form a balanced rapport with both cat and guardian. As the blocks are removed, a cat feels better and the guardian does too. I always say a cat’s actions reflect a cat’s feelings.
